In-Office Electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) in Chicago
Electrocardiograms performed when indicated for cardiovascular risk assessment or symptoms. Results are reviewed in context, with referral to cardiology when advanced interpretation or management is needed.
Benefits of In-Office Electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) Testing
When medically appropriate, we offer in-office electrocardiograms (also called ECG or EKG) as part of your comprehensive, personalized medical care.
An electrocardiogram is a quick, non-invasive test that records the heart’s electrical activity. It can be useful for evaluating symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, or fainting, as well as for monitoring certain medical conditions or medications.

Consistent with evidence-based preventive care guidelines, we do not perform routine ECG screening in people without symptoms who are at low cardiovascular risk. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against screening with resting or exercise ECG in asymptomatic, low-risk adults, and notes that for asymptomatic adults at higher baseline risk, current evidence is insufficient to support routine screening for everyone.
In low-risk populations, routine ECG screening has been shown to increase downstream testing and specialist referrals without clear improvement in cardiovascular outcomes, potentially exposing patients to unnecessary procedures, anxiety, and harm.
Our approach prioritizes clinical judgment over automatic testing. By using ECGs selectively — based on symptoms, medical history, and individual risk — we aim to provide timely, appropriate evaluation while avoiding unnecessary care.
EKG vs. ECG: These terms refer to the same test. “EKG” comes from the German Elektrokardiogramm, while “ECG” is the English abbreviation.

What is an ECG test and why is it important?
An ECG (electrocardiogram) measures the electrical activity of your heart to detect irregular rhythms, heart disease, or other cardiac concerns. It’s a quick, painless test that helps your doctor identify potential heart issues early and monitor your overall cardiovascular health.
What can I expect during an in-office ECG test?
During the test, small electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs to record your heart’s electrical signals. The process takes just a few minutes and provides immediate results for your doctor to review and discuss with you.
Why choose in-office ECG testing in Chicago?
